It would be unusual to get a POUG (see dedicated thread) immediately after purchase, it's usually 48 hours later due to the 24 hour refund provision. Normally POUGs are priced in such a way that they are not the very cheapest way to get to the upgraded cabin, however it sometimes is the most cost effective route, notably if travel does not allow for the Saturday Night rule. AUPs (airport upgrades, also with a dedicated thread) are slightly more expensive than POUGs, on the whole, though not by much. Without the specific details it's difficult to give anything other than to say that the WTP to CW is usually well over £500 each leg, so given the sums already indicated you would be best not to plan on a POUG. Indeed POUGs won't be offered on flights with connections, or which use non-BA operated aircraft.
