Of course they do. An upgrade from Economy to Premium Plus is only 20 PlusPoints; it's 40 to Polaris (or 80 from deep discount economy). When Premium Plus cleared, the number needed for the Polaris upgrade would have been deducted, so that some other upgrade you got couldn't reduce your balance and leave you shy of the points to get to Polaris. After your flight, if you didn't clear to Polaris, the extra PlusPoints should have been refunded. If they weren't, contact customer service and they'll take care of it.

It's way too early to be sure, but Oct. 12 IAH-LHR UA 5, on a Wednesday night, currently looks half-decent; the inventory is J9 ... ZN9 P9 PN0, so they're not currently clearing any upgrades, but they're willing to offer a large number of seats at the deepest discount cash fare. Oct. 22 MUC-ORD UA952, MUC-ORD on a Saturday looks a little tougher: J9 JN9 C9 D7 Z1 ZN1 P0. They currently think they can sell most of their seats without major discounts.
