Can’t believe I’m the first to start a thread on this property.
Currently sitting by the pool (bit of a scene but that’s par for SoCal) and I have to say I really like this property. Just reopened 2 months ago after a major makeover and I’d say it is on par with the best JW resorts I’ve visited. of course it doesn’t hurt that the friendly desk clerk upgraded us to a large hospitality suite which is probably the best free upgrade I’ve ever received at a Marriott property (excl St Regis).
Rooms are spacious and have molten brown toiletries (thankfully not the horrid shower dispensers yet). Plush robes and pool sandals are standard and plenty of towels. Plats receive a breakfast credit in the restaurant that is just sufficient for one entree + beverage but food was all stellar and much better than you typically find the the lounges (though I miss the lounges). All valet parking but those who want to save coin will find free street parking (2 hour weekdays and all day/night on weekends).
the fashion island mall across the street has been around forever and has a good assortment of chain restaurants (PF changs, Cheesecake Factory, etc). A short drive to both SNA, UC Irvine and Balboa Island
overall top notch service everywhere. My only complaint would be that pool chairs were packed by mid afternoon, but was told there were plenty free at 1pm.
this will definitely be my first choice now for Orange County, esp with 50k certs
Addendum: In case you wonder how you end up paying $100+ per night when using Amex certs, be advised the bogus "resort fee" = $45 per night and valet parking = $55 per night. Plus tax
