So can I cancel the current booking and use the value of the ticket for an international booking? The international booking is available on AA.com and includes at least one leg on AA metal both ways (albeit not the international portion). Can I do this with an "I" ticket or not?
You always have to look at the detailed fare rules to see whether a fare is refundable or not, you can't tell just by knowing the fare code. There may be some I fares that are refundable and some that are not. But yes, you should be able to cancel your current booking and use the value to book something else.
