Yeah basically you get into same exact argument with Richard Mille watches. Their price point is 5x or 10x many competitors and many people don't like the aesthetics, materials, or celebrity brand ambassadors. Luckily in a free market you can charge whatever you want and if you get customers good for you.
For what it's worth I really don't think the prices are that outrageous. Clearly there's a market for $1000-1500 for a base room so a
premier junior suite being some multiple of that isn't
that terrible. No point in bemoaning the past since Doronin has owned the company for 7 years already.
Personally I see little value for high end city hotels especially in NYC where I would want to be out and about anyway. But just because it's not for me doesn't mean someone else couldn't find value in it.
