After many experiences with this, I always:
  • take a pic of the gas gauge and time on the dash
  • zoom out and take the same pic (likely the dash is blurry, but you can see the gas gauge is still pointing the same way as the pic above) but also show the garage/return lot/avis sign/something in the background
  • pic of the car in the parking lot with the license plate visible (include your watch if possible)
  • take a pic of the boarding passes for my departure date/time
  • take a pic of the gas station fill-up near the airport
  • take a screenshot of my google timeline for the day, showing when I was in the avis lot/garage
Then start a complaint through Avis.com and include all above pics if the car isn't returned within ~3 hours. They always close the contract relatively quickly (at the time I showed I actually returned it) and email a receipt. Sure, it's a hassle, but has saved tons of time calling/asking them to close out contracts with lots of back & forth or having to get our travel manager involved.

I've also been trying to return through the app lately. If it doesn't work for some reason (often says the GPS location isn't right, or the specific location doesn't participate), I include these screenshots with the above info.
