I gather that, on an internation award from the US, you can have one stopover in the US and one stopover abroad. Some say the stopover has to be en-route to the final destination, other say it has to be at the "point of entry" abroad, and still others say it can be anywhere on the same continent.

!
The rule is:
1) you may stopover at the U.S. gateway city (defined as the last US city before you depart the US, or the first city in the US where you land after being outside the US) EITHER on the outbound OR on the return, but not both.
2) in addition, you may stopover at the first OR last international gateway city (the first and last points you land/depart outside the US), but not both.

In addition to these stopovers, you have a final destination which may be one point or may consist of what's called an "open jaw".

So, one could construct an itinerary such as these:

DFW-CDG (AA) -- train CDG-BRU -- BRU-ORD-DFW (AA- connection at ORD)
or
DFW-JFK (stopover) - CDG (AA) -- train CDG-AMS -- AMS-LGW (BA) stopover at LGW- LGW-DFW (AA)
