I,ve been lucky
Every time I have stayed at a Hilton Hotel as a Gold, I've been upgraded, either to the Executive Floor, or with access to the Lounge. This has been at Huntsville, Alabama, HWV , San Francisco, and Quebec, Canada.

Embassy Suites and Hampton Inns are a different story - never been upgraded there.
