I'm a 1K member and flying to Zurich on 9/23. I have a economy seat booked using miles for now, but I see a lot of available seats in business. None of them are PN or PZ so I know I won't get an auto upgrade if I book with cash instead. However, if there are a number of seats still open in a couple weeks, is it worth cancelling my awards reservation, then booking in cash and applying plus points? It's my first time on this route, so I'm not sure how popular the route is in September or whether business is typically filled with cash customers.
I know I may end up paying cash for an economy seat, but I would be OK with that if there is a reasonable enough chance at an upgrade.

TATL upgrades from SFO are tough; Friday upgrades are tough. The flight has a PE cabin that's sold out; you'd be behind everyone, regardless of status, who put in for an upgrade from a paid PE ticket. The inventory is J9 C0, meaning UA thinks they're likely to sell every remaining seat.
Your chances of an upgrade, as a 1K in Y, on this route are 10% at best, and probably less.
