HH Gold benefits say member will be upgraded to executive level when there's a tower and availability. I've stayed at several Hiltons since getting to the HH Gold level and none have been able to upgrade, saying they are fully booked. Most recently, one of the Hiltons put me in a room the size of a breadbox saying that's the best they had available.

The problem may be that I usually arrive late in the evening, typically 8 or 10pm. Have others been able to upgrade? Or is HH Gold simply not worth much? If that's the case, I might as well start staying at Marriott's and/or *woods again - at least the standard rooms are nicer.

Any tips/suggestions?
