I'd agree with this; with UK AMEX it's just the issue of who takes them and who doesn't, beyond the exceptions the OP sets out. I've paid for car insurance on my AMEX with one company because they took it, but couldn't with another because they didn't. I've also bought travel insurance on it.
Certain utility companies don't take it, either - though I did manage to pay my water bill on it this year, which was handy. But as far as I'm aware there are very few 'product' exclusions on UK AMEX cards, too.
Amex is really taken in most places including for things like road tax. Some smaller places don't take it but I'd say 95% of our monthly cc spend goes on amex (got to get those 2 companion vouchers per year) with only 5% on mastercard/visa.
