Note, it may still be worth giving a call as some have been successful with ultra-short connecting flights that clear but the transcon did not.. YMMV
I’d have to say that 20k miles +$250 (Premium Service upgrade) for a EWR-BOS upgrade is most certainly a ripoff and UA knows that.
