AA191 was May 1979; the type remained in production until 1988. UA and AA retired the DC10 in 2000-01; Northwest flew its last DC10 revenue service in 2007. So, a long, slow, 28-year kibosh.
I happened to be visiting a friend in MIA a few days after AA191. Her condo overlooked the airport. All DC10s were grounded to inspect the engine bolts. I remember a dozen or so planes packed together on the east side of the airport.
