PP are intriguing for vacations with my wife. Pre-board is fine but I don't have issues getting overhead space as Group 1. I suppose I'll just see how I feel in a couple months and decide if the $3K spend is worth the jump in status for me.
As a MM my status choices affect 2 people. When I was in a similar position to yours last year I was cheered on by my wife and daughter (daughter got the companion status, wife also made 1K when we made the PQP run to get to 1K).
As a pure financial proposition the money spent to get to 1K was probably a reach. That said it has been fun and the savings from the PP upgrade to Polaris on an EWR-LHR flight easily exceeded the cost of getting to 1K. I have also noted an uptick in how we have been treated as 1Ks on my most recent flights.
