Interesting to read the responses here. I just hit Platinum and based on my current flights booked through October, I'll be about 3,000 PQP and 4 flight segments short of 1K. I'm contemplating a quick December run to Honolulu in First (through SFO) to reach the 1K. About 70% of my flights are DEN - ORD so a lot of high status flyers on that route. PP are intriguing for vacations with my wife. Pre-board is fine but I don't have issues getting overhead space as Group 1. I suppose I'll just see how I feel in a couple months and decide if the $3K spend is worth the jump in status for me.
As a MM my status choices affect 2 people. When I was in a similar position to yours last year I was cheered on by my wife and daughter (daughter got the companion status, wife also made 1K when we made the PQP run to get to 1K).
As a pure financial proposition the money spent to get to 1K was probably a reach. That said it has been fun and the savings from the PP upgrade to Polaris on an EWR-LHR flight easily exceeded the cost of getting to 1K. I have also noted an uptick in how we have been treated as 1Ks on my most recent flights.
