Actually, this happens far more frequently than one would think. I did a project about five years ago now for Rimowa and AWAY and part of the research was for how often people actually had 5-10K worth of “valuables” in their checked or carry on bags - since for that buyer group it is apparently FREQUENT. They were looking for a tracking solution that could be world wide and reliable, as well as a third party insurer that they could offer as an additional perk of purchase. In the end, no quality solution was available at the time and no insurer would give enough blanket coverage with just too many variables at play. But, while I can’t say the % that reported to often having >5K or >10k worth of “valuables” in their checked baggage, it was quite a bit more than one would assume.
