Lightbulb YIA (New Yogjakarta Airport in Kulon Progo) information - JUL 2022

As it seems there is some confusion and no up to date information about YIA : Yogjakarta's new airport,

Allow me to give some tips.....

Concerning Domestic Arrivals

As soon as you disembark and trek towards the arrivals hall, porters are available to help you with your luggage.
This airport uses aerobridges and therefore no more apron walk as in the past at JOG Adisutjipto.

It could be a long walk towards arrivals

The fabulous rich :
These folks were picked up by the AmanJiwo van at outside arrivals

If travelling with Garuda Business Class or those that are Garuda Elites or SkyTeam Elite Plus,
Your luggage will not appear on the main belt but will be made available at the special Garuda Priority Luggage point.
All priority luggage will be offloaded from the aircraft first and delivered to passengers for pick up here.

My observation and experience:

Garuda priorty luggage point

Porters are available

The immensely large belt area

After collecting your luggage you will leave the secure area.
A whole assortment of counters for your transport needs are available:

Exiting the secure area belt area into the public arrivals hall, you will see these transport counters for bus/ taxi / rideshares etc.

My teens wanted to take each the Gojek into town to the hotel whilest i with S/O and 6 suitcases would go by Grab.....
Cheap indeed but there are limits in comfort and i fortunately chose to have arranged a private driver with a Toyota Innova via business connections during our stay.

For those interested in taking the airport express train, this is the schedule on 17 JUL 2022

And this is the current (slightly irregular) train schedule from the Airport to Yogjakarta's main central trainstation "Tugu"
Locals told us the train used to run every hour precovid,
but now the schedule has been adapted to match the flow of airplane departures/arrivals at the airport.

For those that have arranged transfers via hotels / providers, you will meet these contacts / handlers / representatives outside the terminal building

Going outside and leaving the airconditioned comfort you will be meeted by all the representatives

And here we see the aformentioned fabulous rich couple getting ready to board their transfer to the AmanJiwo to enjoy their well deserved holiday retreat.

In any case you need accomodation due to delays or to be in time at the airport to avoid uncertainty,
The closest hotel to the airport is :
https://granddafamsignature.com/yogyakarta/
Literally on the otherside of the road of the main entrance gate to the airport complex.

It takes about 1,5 H from the airport to city and v.v.
Because most of the road is like this:

Yes.....your eyes are not deceiving you:
a 2x 1,5 lane road connecs the airport to Cilacap - Yogjakarta interstate thorough fare main road.

Fortunately the roads are progressively being upgraded to 2x 2 lanes but traffic will flow at points in one direction while the other traffic waits to let vehicles pass on. This could cause delays so allocate enough time. Hopefully the complete road will be upgraded by next year!

Concerning Departures
Can't say this enough:
Allocate enough time to get to the new airport!

If you are arriving by motorised transport this is what you'll see

You can say a lot but this airport has been designed for future huge flows of passengers

These are the standard parking prices, at least they offer covered parking garage

These are the VIP parking prices : means you can park very close and use the departures drop off and arrivals pick up lanes

Departures level car drop off,
to enter the terminal,
show your international vaccination certificate or local Peduli Lindungi app,
afterwards enter the thermo scan hall
and past luggage x-ray to reach the checkin hall

Saw this at the curb,
Seems you can book a VIP service with access to the Airport's Concordia lounge

The check in hall can be busy (LionAir)

Or it can be quite empty (built for expansion or for restart of more international flights )

Even here autmatons have striked with self service checkin machines!
EDIT after receiving PM
- not my boarding pass sticking out (but thanks for the warning)

These are the airlines, flights and destinations on 29 July 2022,
at these counters you can pay excess luggage fees,
Yes like we did ....

We hauled a lot of junk objet d'art back home.

Airport map:
Note:
- left side is only open during International departures (Kuala Lumpur & Singapore)
(AirAsia is currently operating and rumors are that Scoot will restart service)
(in the past Silkair [MI] operated full service to JOG but it seems Singapore Airlines declared YIA a low yielding route only to be operated by low cost Scoot [TR] )
- right side is for domestic departures

Garuda offers checkin counters for
- Economy
- Sky Priority (Garuda Elites + SkyTeam Elite Plus)
- Business Class
Counters are open about 2,5H before flight departure

The Garuda Lounge is not open yet so they provide per person a voucher worth 75.000 IDR
(good for a hot meal + drink) at participating venues
Locals said the lounge will only open if travel demand reaches a level that Garuda will increase flight frequencies

For example:
Pre-pandemic : Garuda flew 3x a day JOG-DPS(Bali) vv.
Currently JUL 2022 : Garuda flies only 2x p/week YIA-DPS(Bali) vv. on FRI & SUN only

Behind this happy couple you see the entrance to domestic security: the classic way with metal arches

After formalities are done, you will have to walk a zig zag like LHR though shops.
Actually most of them weren't open yet so instead featured displays of Wayang Kulit [shadow theatre] characters.

Javanese Wayang Kulit form of Hanuman : from Classical Indian Mahabaratha
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanuman

After security : secure departures area
Yes, it is a very big space!

Distances can be far but a complimentary buggy service is available

We dropped off my S/O at the reflexology place,
he said he needed that after a 1,5H drive with 2 hyperactive teens and 6 suitcases ...
Mentioned afterwards it was sheer bliss and he was ready to tackle the world!

Having a peek at Periplus: Indonesian bookstore selling English language titles

Some shops are available :
OMG: Chocolate with Wedang Uwuh flavour!

A minimarket (IndoMaret) is available if you want to stock up on drinks and nibbles if you fly lowcost no frills airline

Ample seating everywhere

These are the poweroutlets at the seats:
- European -
- USB A -
- USB C -

1st Place where the Garuda Business Class voucher is valid

2nd Place where the Garuda Business Class voucher is valid
Yes it has a smoking room , Yay!

The airport has its own smoking room but this one is the better "comfy" choice!

3rd Place where the Garuda Business Class voucher is valid
A really good Halal place

A safe choice for those observant

The menu of Solaria: Garuda Business Class voucher covers a hot meal + drink

And if you travel with 2 teen sons whom are a bit fed up with rice in their daily food intake
and need to fix their western food craving.....

One wanted to go to A&W :

Ah at least he felt very happy afterwards and stopped pestering for wanting fries

While the other wanted a drink from an Infamous Seattle coffee conglomo :

He said it tasted exactly like the real thing and recommends ....

Nothing more to comment than that taste is personal and different in the generation gap

Back on the airport,
You can see in the far distance how close it is to the Indian Ocean

The new airport uses aerobridges,
No more walking on the apron as at the old airport,
In the far distance you can see the ocean,
It is paralel to the runway

The sophisticated tsunami and quake monitoring system at the airport

Remember the mention of the VIP service at the departures car drop off curb with the Concordia mention?
This is the associated Concordia Lounge located near gate 3

Accepts all kind of eligable Indonesian Bank card holders

Our Garuda departure gate to Bali,
Notice a seperate lane for Business Class + Sky Priority

When time to board the aircraft, you'll go 1 level down by elevator or escalator

No complaints with our Garuda flight to Bali but we spotted:
Dutch Queen of Gossip of SBS6 shownews and responsible for importing mindnumbing musicals to The Netherlands
Albert Verlinde https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Verlinde
Seems he did the Indonesian Aman grand tour:
AmanJiwo - AmanDari - AmanKila (nothing < $1000)

https://www.aman.com

Albert Verlinde Reading the AmanDari brochure : Fancy Schmanzy!

Yes it is Albert Verlinde next to his hubby Onno Hoes
Should i report this to Yvonne = Dutch Empress of JuiceChannels & Gossip
https://www.youtube.com/c/lifeofyvonne NSFW !

https://www.instagram.com/lifeofyvonne/?hl=en

More honorable mention and
more of interest to me was actually this:

Mount Merapi Volcano and its sibling Mount Merbabu Volcano and other family members....
We departed from direction west to east
and sitting on the left side of the aircraft you are treated to this amazing view!

lsquare : hope this will provide some insight
The Hyatt Hotel has a Golden Bird counter but i have no idea of their pricing

Sorry for this lengthy post but as it is difficult to find information about YIA airport departures and arrivals,
I thought it best to provide the FT- Community with as much data as possible to remove travel uncertainties,
Hope this information will be useful for future travellers to/from Yogjakarta!
