UA risks alienating the real frequent flyers by allowing too many people to qualify via promotions, lower hurdles, etc. If one is not getting the benefits envisioned when qualifying, then why qualify? The ones who notice the lack of benefits more frequently are the ones who fly the most often. It is totally inane of UA to allow extendees at 1K to compete for upgrades on par with earned 1Ks. UA should have instituted a extendee-vs-earned discriminator for upgrades, or gone to AA's rolling discriminator. UA needs to do better by the real spenders - none of us are staying for UA's food.
End the promotions (or limit them to the lower level of status where expectations are low anyway) and put the hurdles back to pre-pandemic. The sooner, the better.
