My experience has been hotel specific. Also, depending on your arrival time. Arriving late, check-in online and hope for an upgrade when you arrive or the following day.

I've always contacted the hotels prior via the app and some give out upgrades that way, but a small percentage in my experience.

Waiting until arrival is the best overall except late at night when you'll probably get what's left.
