I'm flying on an international flight and I want to carry on my backpack (camera gear) and a standard carry-on Rollerboard.
Unfortunately, my first flight is united express Air Wisconsin which says they do not take ANY rollerboards in the cabin and green-tag them.
That's OK if I am guaranteed to get my bag at the GATE so I can then bring it to my international flight(s)
I've heard horror storied of GATE-CHECKED luggage being checked to a final destination and never heard of again or at least for a few days.
This trip is too important to not have my luggage.
It's been my experience on connecting flights -- particularly to international flights -- if you fly UEX to UA / others internationally -- you will get your bag back to you at the gate -- albeit after a wait sometimes -- as someone that flew from 20 years from a UEX outstation to ORD / EWR / IAD to international -- I never once had my carry on bag kept and automatically sent on it's way.... Now the other way -- departing ORD for ROC and leaving a bag next to the boarding door -- yes I've been told many times to pick it up at baggage claim -- but never the other way.... This is usually because the arrival airport doesn't have the staff to bring carry on bags to the jetway -- so it all goes to baggage claim....
