That is the only routing that SW offers for KOA-DTW at all, and it is just on Sundays, it looks like per calendar.
the flight timing and price are way better than other carriers, so booked it, but realized I am not sure what happens if there’s a problem with the plane(s) or it is cancelled. Since it is just once a week, what is SW’s policy in case of issues?
refund only? Other carrier? Find some routing that works but isn’t actually sellable?

if it gets cancelled you will need to do split flights with a night stay somewhere on two different tickets.
most likely something like KOA-OAK/ LAX-DEN (or Midwest city) , night there then next day to DTW.
you might have look look at where DTW get direct flights from ( DEN, MDW PHX). In doing searches you might see you can get to PHX then 2 hrs later there is a OHX- connect- DTW flight you can’t book as one ticket
