Depending on what time your flight out of ATH is, I would consider staying out by the airport (HI Athens Airport is a good option and usually much cheaper than the Sofitel) and just meeting your friends and returning to the hotel that evening. Suggesting this since it does not seem that your one night stay in Athens is for sightseeing or anything specific to being in the city.
