Of course what BA should do is just open free seat selection for people traveling with U12s, and that would avoid the need for last minute reshuffles. But in any case, this is NOT something to take the OP to task on when it's clearly BA policy...
BA strongly advises they reserve seats together.
The impact of not doing so in this instance is clearly understood in advance.
Hardly surprising someone would show up unable to distinguish between "what can I get away with to profit irrespective of the impact to other pax" with being thoughtful, given the proudly selfish behavior so rampant these days.
