I have Google Voice, which is my main US number. It is cheaper just to buy a local data sim or in this case, Airalo or Three/Orange etc. I can call anywhere in Canada/US from my GV number (over wifi or data) as if I was in the US so that's all I really need.
When traveling in some countries it's almost impossible to avoid the need to text a local number for various services. AFAIK Google Voice never supported sending texts to international numbers - I presume you haven't run into that?
