Except that he is not connecting - he has a separate unconnected booking - It would seem that , unless travelling in business or 1st class, that there would be no lounge entitlement and any access would be reliant upon goodwill
With appropriate OW status, then indeed would have access to lounges that are avauilable basef on Status
As far as luggage goes, indeed, he will need to clear immigration, collect baggage and then go to the QR check in
I would suggest keep checking for award availability for DOH-SYZ and see whether availability opens up - if it does then there would be no additional mileage cost and would ensure that baggage can be checked through and that there is lounge access by virtue of the AA flight
