I always check-in online 48 hours prior. I then send the property a message with my arrival details and if I haven't already been upgraded, request one. On both of my last two US stays, one in Seattle & one near LAX, the properties blocked off an upgraded room for me. The latter to a suite with an early check-in. I knew my room number 48 hours before and had digital keys before arriving at the property.
