AA eliminated EQMs earlier this year. The new metric for attaining status is ""Loyalty Points." If all flights on your ticket are AA-coded, the number of Loyalty Points you'll earn will be based on the pre-tax price of your ticket, regardless of how many flights -- or miles -- you actually fly.
Caveat is that only if it's fare based. There are still distance based fares out there that it could make a difference.
