No, fare rules have nothing to do with anything here, there was probably a minor schedule change somewhere along the way and AA's computers just automatically rebooked you on the shortest / most direct routing.
If your original A-B-C flights still exist then it will be no problem to switch back, but you need to call AA.
But as guv mentioned above EQM are no longer a thing, so if that's the only reason you picked the original routing you might want to reevaluate.
