On a recent trip from Seattle to Honolulu, I ended up flying SEA-OGG in F on AS, but then taking a $29 WN puddle-jumper on a separate OGG-HNL PNR. I did this because I wanted to use GGU's and couldn't find any U space for SEA-HNL, but U space was available for SEA-OGG. I know Southwest isn't everyone's cup of tea, but for $29 and free checked bags, I didn't mind potentially having to sit in a middle seat in the back of the plane since we were going to be in the air for less than half an hour (heck, I've stood on jam-packed commuter subway cars for twice as long, albeit pre-covid). But because AS and WN don't have an interline agreement, it was a bit of a pain having to leave the secure area at OGG, pick up our luggage, check them back in with WN, and then going through TSA again.
This thread has me realizing that I should have booked on HA instead of WN. Inter-island flights on both airlines were priced similarly, but I chose WN because I thought that I'd have to pay HA for the checked bags at OGG, since for some reason, I didn't think AS and HA interlined either. But since they do, then when I checked in at SEA, I should have been able to give them my HA PNR and my bags would have automatically been transferred to my connecting HA flight at OGG, right? And I believe it wouldn't have cost me anything. Since I'd be checking in at SEA, and not only was I flying in F, but I'm also MVP Gold, I wouldn't have been charged anything, right? AS wouldn't try to collect HA's inter-island baggage fee of $15 per bag (for HawaiianMiles members, $25/bag for non-members) from me, would they?
