Suggest you get your hotel to hire you a car and driver. Otherwise the bus is the only option. You could fly from Kunming direct to Lijiang which is what we decided to do and skipped going to Dali.

Lijiang is lovely though and worth the trip. From there we went up to Zhongdian and then flew back to Kunming.
