Exactly. About 8 years ago my bag was put on an earlier flight while I was on my scheduled one. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to find out what had happened to it. I thought bags were supposed to matched to passengers but not always.
It's happened to me a couple of times. What's going on is you are not allowed to separate from your bag, but your bag is allowed to separate from you. The important aspect is who is in control of the situation--nobody's going to pack a bomb in the hope it goes on a different flight than they're on.
