I’m assuming you’re BA Exec Blue, in which case free seat selection only opens at check-in. Bronze holders get free seat selection seven days before departure and Silver and above get it from time of booking onwards. For me, gaining Silver was worth it just for the seat selection as we used to like the pairs of WT seats at the back of the 777s when travelling as a couple.
