Seems like the Explorist trial starts after your first checkout after registering (which theoretically be after 90 days after registering) but the nights to maintain Explorist or attain Globalist is WITHIN 90 days of registering.
I signed up and completed the promo and the stay that brought me to 20 nights was within 90 days after the first checkout, a bit past 90 days after registering.
So it does work such that after your first stay, you have 90 days to complete the rest of the nights. The longer your first stay, the fewer nights you have to complete in the following 90 days to keep/upgrade the status.
