I do not know whether the return can be cancelled before the outbound has been flown; it was not an issue in my case. I did have to wait a day or two after the outbound was flown for the refund of the return portion to be requested, as I was told by AA that the outbound first needed to "fall off" the record.
All AAdvantage awards are cancellable up until departure.
