Are you able to fly home from either Ålesund, Bergen or Oslo? That could open up other possibilities.

The Lysefjord, Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, Sunnfjord, Nordfjord, Geirangerford, Hjørundfjord and Storfjord are all impressive. I wouldn't exclude initiatives that does not include Stegasteinen on this trip.

Unfortunately, one way rentals in Norway are prohibitively expensive. Fortunately, both Ålesund and Bergen are served with both airports and scenic train/bus service.

You can get to Bergen by train doing part of the Norway in a Nutshell tour. Train to Flåm, boat to Gudvangen, bus to Voss, train to Bergen. Or maybe just rent a car in Voss, drive around for a few days and fly out of Bergen? Or in Bergen, take the Hurtigruten to Ålesund, rent a car there for a few days, flying out of Ålesund?

Or you could do something similar to this TR (minus the mecanics stop &#128513: An impromptu road trip in Norway

If you really want to get the full experience of the West coast, then fly to Bergen, renting a car, take the Hurtigruten ferry with the car to Ålesund, drive the car back to the Bergen crossing the fjords and fly out of Bergen. Tips on using the Hurtigruten with car: https://www.mark-koenig.de/travel/no...ar-round-trip/

There's lot of opportunities, even in April. Just make sure you get a rental car with winter tires if necessary.
