And an incredibly weak offer can actually have a worse effect than receiving none at all. The targeted promo I received is so insulting that I am absolutely determined not to put a single night Marriott's way, lest they think their lame offer somehow incentivised me to stay (though I doubt Bonvoy IT is even capable of matching subsequent stay patterns to offers received)
At least if I hadn't received any offer, I might still nurture a forlorn hope that something like double nights or double points could eventually land in my mailbox.
