I don't believe it has stopped (someone correct me if I am wrong here). A-List preferred, A-List, and CP parties are assigned boarding numbers (in that order) to make sure everyone is seated together. As a CP without A-List, you and your companion should be in the A-30/40 range.
This "perk" must not apply to us. I have a companion pass and we usually check in within seconds of the 24 hour opening. Almost always get B. Today we were B33 & B34 and we checked in within 10 seconds of 24 hour opening.
