There are several problems with guidebooks nowadays. The first is that they insist on giving information which the internet does better (opening hours, prices, hotels, restaurants etc) and, with the pandemic, it’s now even more out of date than usual. The second is that they are normally written by people who are not native to the city in question. The third is too much emphasis on minor churches with, at best, moderate interest and too little emphasis on understanding a city, its culture and its beat.

In the last few years I have used LP, Fodors and Frommers and all were useless. I was excited to see the newly revamped DK ones but, if anything, they were less relevant than the old ones. Cadogan, which had really good bits, have disappeared. But I did find really good info in a couple of different Moon guides so those are now my go to books.
