It just seems odd to me that many less than frequent travelers are picking up the card for some reason. If not using it for travel, they might be better off sticking with a fee-free 2% cashback card.
Incentives drive the world, and we're been experiencing a bit of a sign-up bonus arms race. I suspect the referral program is actually a massive contributor to this, when you have the option to earn 25k miles for every person you sign up it's going to lead to a lot of "Hey Uncle Jim, you should get this card that gives you $750 if you spend $4k, and it
pays you $5 to have it every year after that!" conversations.
It's not limited to Capital One - just a quick spin around the Amex sub-Reddit and you can see what things like the 90k Gold card SUB have done to lure in folks.
