Next time I'll take the TGV from Paris to Marseille (<3.5 hours) and visit the region and then back to Paris from Montpellier (3 hours). It'll be a nice trip to revisit Avignon, Aix, Arles, etc. Looking forward to it! (OT: is Montpellier worth a 2 to 3 days' visit? Never been there before.)
Montpellier is an interesting city to visit: university town, lots of old (and recent) architecture to admire, walkable, tons of cafés and restaurants that are not too overpriced (student population) ... If I were to stay for 2-3 days, I would definitely rent a car and head into the Cévennes mountains (north of the city) fo a day or overnight trip.
