Could it be the same person we’re talking about? An Eastern European lady in her 50’s. I travel with a full size two wheel Briggs & Riley carry on as well as a large Swissgear backpack that I hang from the carry on using the strap the suitcase came with. She was not interested in the slightest about the latter. Just lectured me for next time about safety and security concerns about bags falling out of the overhead. I almost wanted to ask her how many deaths has she heard about on US carriers where overweight bags have fallen out of the overhead?

But usually they're just trying to get people through as fast as possible. Just about everyone is checking bags there so when you don't they just hand you boarding passes.
I flew from IST on Sunday and was only asked if I’m checking in anything. This was in the Miles & Smiles check in, was flying to ATL and the wait on the J side was long for the US flights security check so we were directed to the M&S check in where there barely was a wait.
