Even when airlines are technically supposed to give you a hotel room, they'll often slow-play it in order to frustrate passengers into not taking advantage.

A couple years back, AA in CLT, flight canceled due to mechanical. Rebooked in the morning automatically, easy call, I should get a hotel room, right? Well, AA said anyone wanting a hotel room would need to walk to the another part of the airport and wait in a long queue to talk to ONE agent. By the time we got there, there were already about 100 people in line from another flight. No way to book a hotel in their app or website. They were filtering PAPER (!!) vouchers through a single agent.

Fortunately there were Marriotts nearby that were very cheap award redemptions, so we found a place to stay. But I'm sure many of the people in line either never got a room or got one hours after we did.

Regulations say the airlines owe you accommodation in certain cases, but the regulations do not say the accommodation must be bookable via app/website or in any way easy to access. It's very easy for them to gatekeep the vouchers.
