I bought it connected to VZW from Apple and about three months later I dropped VZW after decades of service through them and moved to US Mobile, which gives me all the saem VZW service on 4G and 5G but at 1/3 the cost of their unlimited plans. And all I had to do was pop the SIM in, and wait for my number to port over. Your right, though, years ago vendor lock in was a thing, even with iPhones, buy not common these days (the Apple store specificly says they are all unlocked, even carrier connected ones, except for ATT phones on installment plans. Any other carrier they offer and the phone will be unlocked from the beginning.
If you went from Verizon to a Verizon MVNO such as US Mobile, then even a carrier locked Verizon phone would still work.
For those who have a US military background, Apple still gives a 10% discount upon verification for their products. For a new phone, that can be a chunk of change. I saved $110 on my 13 Pro Max.
