Airlines counter that by factoring in longer block times for flights under the idea that passengers will arrive early more often than not and be delighted by the airline. I'm not sure this is the best strategy, and it wouldn't be my preference, but DL is especially notable for this.
I don't know why people think AA wants people to misconnect. I promise you that they don't.
I don't its that AA wants people to misconnect, it's more they are willing to make investments in people and assets to ensure less misconnections. Can't tell you the number of times, particularly going into MIA at night paxs due to late arriving flight have just enough time to connect. Then to there's no gate and have the Captain come on repeatedly indicating still waiting for a gate.
