Does TK, particularly at JFK, weigh carry on? Only time I ever experienced this was QR at JFK and they were very strict about cabin weight limits. Adding a monster telephoto to the bag for upcoming Tanzania trip!
TK is not that strict, especially if you are in J. So long as you do not turn up with something the size of Hubble you should be fine.
