Thanks for the replies. I may end up TOFTT, I’ll post here about the experience. With 2 or 3 other Biz Plats I cannot imagine in 2-3 months paying almost $700 without a lucrative retention offer which now seems to be a thing of the not-too-distant past.
The retention offer I accepted 8 months ago is relatively small, not nearly enough to offset the $695 AF and if clawed it back wouldn’t upset me too much. I just hope any (potential) adverse action is limited to clawback and not confiscating all MR points and/or permanent pop-up jail and/or financial review and/or AmEx shutdown; those actions would be annoying.
Lesson learned (already) is only accept retention offers at about 12 months. An offer accepted at 2 months can be as much of a curse as a blessing
