Had a similar situation at an Aloft. They offered only points and no breakfast. According to Marriott Customer service that is okay, as the hotel can choose what welcome gift it wants to offer

I wrote back, that the terms say the opposite and that the Elite member can choose, but that is nowadays Marriott standpoint. Can't wait for more and more hotels to get rid of the breakfast for Elite members and just give you the "big amount" of points.
