In countries like the United States and Canada, there are highway improvements known as "rest areas" with things such as toilets which are generally used for necessary tasks such as resting while taking a long journey. More recently, over-the-road truckers are using them for their mandated rest periods. I presumed that a highway journey between LGW and LHR might pass by one of these facilities, which would easily and safely accommodate my suggestion. Generally, when transferring between airports with a significant amount of luggage and an inconvenient layover time (where you might not be able to immediately check-in this luggage at the second port) a self-driven automobile transfer is a convenient way to get both secure luggage storage, the transfer and the ability to "kill time" unimpeded. I had a terrific time, once, with a 10 hour transfer between EWR and JFK just getting a car and exploring.
Very impressive assumption that everything works the same way in foreign countries as it does in the US - and then insulting the locals who tell you how it is.
