True, but I suspect OP is flying all UA. I can't think of another airline that would be flying MBJ-IAH.
Normally I'd agree, but there's less risk here because there's no question of locating the bag, assuming that OP takes care of it at the re-check counter rather than waiting until after security.
Thank you, helpful to know that all segments need to have availability even if I plan on only changing one, yes all flights are UA. Good point about having to re-check bags anyways so if i can confirm after clearing customs, the bags can be re-tagged. Thanks again.

jsloan said, the inventory has to be available for any remaining eligible segments. So if you want to confirm MBJ-IAH-PDX, your fare class has to be available for MBJ-IAH-PDX. If you have flown MBJ-IAH, then only IAH-PDX has to be available once you board the MBJ-IAH and the flight is departed since the leg will "fall off" your itinerary.
Any eligible segments cannot include any non-UA flights.
Again, you can always chat with AoD and see if they are willing to do it.
Thank you for pointing out option on switching after boarding/flying MBJ-IAH. This would allow me to try once at MBJ to confirm MBJ-IAH-PDX, and if that does not happen, possibly stand-by on IAH-PDX and try and confirm after MBJ-IAH takes off, either via app mid-flight, not sure if that is a far reach, but at least at IAH once i land and get through customs. All flights are UA operated and ticketed.
