I’ve seen AA, DL, and UA in the US refuse to pay for room nights for passengers who were subject to a misconnect on domestic itineraries. Until after the early 90s, the US airlines weren’t so miserly so often. At some point it could be quite interesting to see that my DL status would mean I get my room paid for by DL, but non-status customers in the same class of service on the same flights were provided no assistance or told to pay for a discounted room on their own. While I appreciated that my FFP status counted for something, I didn’t appreciate that the airline had become extra-cheap in providing the same assistance to others who almost certainly needed it more than I.
Northwest used to provide me a special amenity kit when I got into a hub or focus city without my checked luggage or was misconnecting overnight. Even on domestic US flights. Even on economy class flights. Into at least the early or mid-1990s.
There was a time when some European carriers supplied special amenity kits when a passenger reported a lost bag at the airport. It would contain some basic toiletries, a white T-shirt, stretch black socks, etc. I haven't been offered this recently.
I have a collection of BA and Finnair t-shirts from amenity kits given to me in such circumstances — some from trips around 10-15 years ago.
