USA full service carriers would probably provide or reimburse a hotel room only if there's an overnight delay (defined by number of hours delay and time of day) which was that airline's fault. This assumes that reasonably priced hotel rooms are available within a reasonable distance of the airport. Elites tend to get better treatment. LCCs and especially ULCCs are likely to do nothing unless local regulation (such as EC261) requires it.

If you're stranded in an airport overnight, check the sleeping in airports website for suggestions.

When passengers are stranded at MSP, staff bring out cots and blankets for people to use.

OTOH, I know people who were stranded at a major EU airport due to a strike and not only did all of the airport vendors close for the night (so that no one could even buy water), but airport staff locked all of the restrooms and locked people in the airport when it closed for the night.
